A Thermally Actuated Polymer Micro Robotic Gripper for Manipulation of Biological Cells
نویسندگان
چکیده
The development of a novel polymer-based micro robotic gripper that can be actuated in a liquid medium is presented in this paper. The basic structure for the gripper is a trimorph thermal actuator with a platinum metal heater encapsulated by poly-para-xylylene C (parylene C) polymer layers. Due to the large difference of thermal expansion coefficients of the different layers, the actuator can be actuated with much large deflection than conventional MEMS actuators. We have developed actuators operating in liquid environment (e.g., DI water) with only 3V at ~33mA input to achieve full deflection (90 change of tip direction). The actuators were also observed to respond to 3Hz square wave input in water with no visible delay. The temperature of the actuators at full deflection was estimated to be about 60C, which is much lower than the typical requirement of >100C to actuate other conventional MEMS actuators. Actuators with dimensions of ~2mmx100μmx0.6μm were used to capture Danio rerio follicles (~800μm average cell diameter) in water. The design, fabrication process, and experimental results for these actuators are presented in this paper.

System identification and microposition control of ionic polymer metal composite for three-finger gripper manipulation
Smart materials have been widely used for control actuation. A robotic hand can be equipped with artificial tendons and sensors for the operation of its various joints, mimicking human hand motions. The motors in the robotic hand could be replaced with novel electroactive polymer (EAP) actuators. In the three-finger gripper proposed in this paper, each finger can be actuated individually so tha...

Optical tweezers are used for manipulation of micron-sized dielectric beads and cells. Some biological cells are vulnerable to photo damage if subjected to laser based direct manipulation. In such cases, precise manipulation of these cells can be accomplished by using gripper formations made up of glass beads actuated by optical tweezers. Indirect manual manipulation of cells using optically he...

This paper presents a new design of mobile micro manipulation system for robotic micro assembly where a compliant piezoelectric actuator based micro gripper is designed for handling the miniature parts. The compensation of misalignment during robotic peg-in-hole assembly is achieved by this compliant micro gripper because the piezoelectric actuator has capability of producing the displacement i...
